Anyone can throw together ingredients and call it a premix, but what sets Trouw Nutrition apart from the competition is our extensive Ingredient Intelligence. "Over the past two decades, Trouw Nutrition’s focus on securing safe, sustainable and functionally superior ingredients has led the pet food industry,” said Tom Best, Director of Quality and Food Safety. “Our unique Ingredient Intelligence technologies have amassed critical ingredient attributes to streamline ingredient selection and perfect blending."
Ingredient Intelligence impacts how Trouw Nutrition develops innovative products, how we formulate, how we execute our Quality Assurance program, how we assess our suppliers, how we train our employees, and ultimately, how we serve our customers.
Innovation is one of Trouw Nutrition’s Core Values and speaks to our commitment to never settling for the status quo and to continually seek better solutions for our customers. Our Innovation Team, comprised of some of the brightest consultants and professors in the industry and the specialists at Trouw Nutrition, discusses new research and industry trends toward identifying what innovations will best advance our customers’ businesses.
At the heart of our innovation pursuit is our commitment to developing innovative functional ingredients that improve the lives of our furry friends. Trouw Nutrition experts leveraged their knowledge of egg-based antibodies to develop ImmuFlexTM, a functional ingredient designed to boost immune health in pets.
With Optimin®, our experts used their advanced understanding of chelates to develop organic trace minerals held together by bonds that are stronger than any other product’s.
Exercising their knowledge of osmoregulation and osmoprotectants, Trouw Nutrition experts created Selko TNIBetain®, an all-natural superior alternative to choline chloride that enhances gut health and maintains cellular water balance during times of stress, such as dehydration and in sickness.
But it’s not just our proprietary functional ingredients that make us unique; it’s also our commitment to sourcing the finest ingredients and to partnering with only the best suppliers that meet our high standards set forth by our rigorous Item Supplier Assessment & Management (ISAM) program.
"For the past several years, we have been on a quest to more fully understand our ingredients and how their properties affect other ingredients and the final premix," said Scott Buchwalter, Senior Quality Assurance and Laboratory Manager. "With the technologies we continue to add, our Ingredient Intelligence increases. There have been occasions when we have been able to tell a manufacturer more about their ingredient than they actually knew themselves."
Every one of our 400+ ingredients undergoes a comprehensive assessment, and even after receiving approval, every supplier must continue to pass third-party audits, complete surveys, report on quality assurance procedures and if necessary, continue to pass in-person audits to ensure ongoing compliance with Trouw Nutrition’s ISAM program.
Our Ingredient Intelligence methods apply across the supply chain. "Trouw Nutrition’s unique Ingredient Intelligence technology is first class,” said Jorden Clark, Procurement Director. “This gives us in Procurement the step above the competition when competing for the best quality and cost-effective ingredients. Having the data and knowledge at the tip of our fingers is critical in fast-moving environments.”
Not only will our experts partner with you to formulate for your unique functional claims, but we will also ensure that every pet food premix and blend provides ingredients at the right levels and that work in combination.
“There are thousands of ingredient combinations that Trouw can blend for our customers, but that doesn’t mean they all should be blended or that they are the best solution for the pet or customer,” said Dr. Trevor Faber, Companion Animal Nutritionist. “By having an in-depth understanding of the ingredient characteristics I’m formulating with, it enables Trouw to provide high-quality products for our customers to help their products succeed in the market.”
Even with the finest ingredients, our pet food premixes and blends are not safe unless the ingredients are added at the precise quantities and pass contaminant testing, among other tests.
To safeguard our customers’ brands and the health and well-being of our pets, Trouw Nutrition production workers complete our Universal Worker training program, qualifying them to successfully execute every stage of production.
“At Trouw Nutrition our team prides itself on the training and systems that run in parallel and complement the Ingredient Intelligence process," said Andy Fischer, Director of Operations. "The Universal Training system ensures our team is trained, flexible and nimble to manage challenges to keep our customer satisfaction at the highest levels in a demanding and ever-changing market.”
With this training and an average nine years’ experience, our skilled production workers know how to monitor ingredients throughout the manufacturing process.
"Ingredient Intelligence is a key part in checking the quality of our raw materials," said Amanda Zinkgraf, Assistant Operator. "Knowing the color, texture and, in some cases, smell of a raw material helps me recognize anything out of the ordinary before I ever even weigh it up for a premix. The sooner a quality issue is addressed, the better it is not just for our customers but for the company."
“Our customers choose to work with Trouw Nutrition because of our Ingredient Intelligence and superior ingredient quality," said Kelly Chism, Quality Assurance/Laboratory Analyst. "Every pet food premix, blend and ingredient receives extensive quality assurance checks to ensure our customers receive only the best.”
Every pet food premix receives an average of 101 quality checks before it leaves our facilities. The checks begin with our production workers, performing organoleptic reviews on incoming ingredients and continues with our Quality Assurance team.
“Trouw Nutrition’s exceptional Quality Assurance program incorporates the latest technologies, such as XRF, NIR, PFT and LIMS, but what really separates us from the competition is our team of industry experts with the knowledge and skills to operate them and ensure the safety of our products,” said Dean Grazier, Quality Control Coordinator.
